Performing Power: Ritual and Politics in Late Classic Southeastern Mesoamerica
Focusing on the archaeology of Southeastern Mesoamerica, this talk will explore the political and economic upheavals occurring throughout northwestern Honduras at the end of the Late Classic period. Specifically, the efforts of a fledgling group of leaders at the mid-level craft-producing community of Las Canoas will be examined as evidence of individualistic attempts to take advantage of shifts in politico-economic networks of alliance in the region. In particular, I will discuss the importance of specialized ritual performances in legitimizing the fragile power of these emerging leaders.
